Well....keep in mind that the hatch is higher in the rear than the wagon. I can speculate as to why but have never researched it. Just know that the hatch is higher and being shorter accentuates the height visually.

Just did a little investigating with my parts database concerning the 'tail high' issue. I've noticed the same thing on these little hatches.

I checked for any differences between models as far as parts are concerned on the rear suspension. Found out that all the DL/GL models had the same rear suspension parts (just talking 4WD here, 2WD's had a dfferent rear suspension setup), regardless of body style. The only difference I could tell was that the station wagon used different shocks. That's it..same torsion bars even....
-- So being significantly lighter in the rear end made the little hatch sit higher.

guy's need i remind you that used cars are through the roof right now.

    for a couple reasons,
    1. cash for clunkers killed A LOT of the used cars that were out there.
    2. used cars are cheaper than new in most cases and people are buying them instead to save money (really not the case if you factor in interest on new vs used).
    3. lots of people have wrecked credit because of the housing bubble.
used car financing is more forgiving than new.

But...there is only a small percentage that want a doggie, early 80's, little old Subaru hatchback. While the EA81 engine will go 300K miles it takes forever to do it.:biglaugh: They are dogs. You have to like them for specific reasons.

A1A.....here's a clean one for 1/3 the money.......

The Subaru Brat of the same era also sits high in the rear. Thing is about this weird stance is......they roll easy.:yup: Ask me how I know. In '82 I lived up on a mountain top. Built a FLW house up there all by myself. Driveway was steep and had a drop off into the woods on one side. People were afraid to drive up there in the SUMMER time.:yikes: Never mind in the winter with snow and ice. I bought a new Hatch for me and a new Brat for my woman of the era. I did a Subaru summer-salt with a half twist in the hatch one snowy night and a full twist mid air roll into a corn field with the Brat (different night....in the summer). Both athletic feat's were done to perfection and finished with a solid 4 point landing.:victory: These little uni-bodies are tough. I drove both of them home after both performances.:bouncy: The hatch rolled on the side, flipped end over end during a twist, landed on its top and continued end over to its feet. There were huge snow banks or I wouldn't be here.:162: The whole top of the car was shifted a foot to the right and now sat about 6 inches up from the seats, there was NO glass left and there wasn't a square foot of sheet metal that wasn't damaged. Yup....I paid a guy 50 bucks to pull me out of the ditch where I was buried in wet snow and drove the car 40 miles home. I had to lean forward all the way because the driver's seat was laid back flat to the rear seat. Not to mention the lowered roof.:D When the air show was finally complete, I was lying flat on my back....still in the driver's seat. It was a cold and snowy night and I froze my tail off on that ride! Heater still worked, though....but, with no windows....it was COLD! The Brat was a simple air borne sideways roll that came down back on its feet. Not even a dent.:whew:
Anyway....the way these old Suby hatches and Brat's sit with the high, light rear end and a dog engine....you don't want to throw them into a tight curve at 70 and expect to power out!:biglaugh:

That's probably because the suspension rusted through the Structurals of the rear of the frame/ body:D

Yeah, fggn....they have shock towers that go up into the rear hatch area that are prone to collect salt and rust there. Sometimes they will break right into the inside of the car in that area. However, before that would happen, the car should still sit high in the rear.
