Working Station Wagons

I think I may have snagged this one from the Vintage Street Scenes thread.

 

Very cool that you took this picture in 64 when the Mercury wagon was virtually new. Its really a very unusual wagon. In 63, Mercury had the mid size Meteor wagons which were not available in 62 and which were dropped for the 64 model year. So, for 63, Mercury had dropped the full size Commuter wagon, leaving the 63 Colony Park "woody" wagon as Mercury's only full size wagon. In 64 the non-woody Commuter wagon returned to the Mercury lineup. This is the first and only photo I've ever seen of a full size 63 Mercury wagon without the wood-like trim on the sides.

I've seen a photo in the past of a 60 Chevy wagon with the retractable "trucks" in the fully extended position with the car "driving" on the rails, but I hadn't seen photos showing the retracted position. Wagons like these were used on the rail roads as track inspection vehicles and by railroad executives, for supervising maintainance work on the track and for ferrying crew chiefs or personnel up and down the line.
